Assembly Tasks Delta Govt On Illegal Road Blocks
The Delta State House of Assembly has passed a resolution, urging the State Government to take drastic measures against rising waves of illegal road blocks and extortion of commuters along Ohoror/Bomadi Road in the state.
This followed the adoption of a motion by the member representing PDP-Bomadi, Oboro Preyor, during plenary in Asaba on Tuesday.
The Assembly also called on the State Government to dismantle, remove and close down all existing illegal road blocks and illegal tax collection points mounted at Ohoror/Agadama in Ughelli Local Government Area of the state.
The lawmakers also called for the apprehension and prosecution of the perpetrators and operators of the illegal road blocks and money collection in line with the applicable Laws of the State.
Presenting the motion, Preyor decried the rising cases of illegal road blocks, extortion of commuters and trading along the Ohoror/Bomadi Road in Delta State.
He noted that the incident had led to drastic increase in the price of foodstuffs in the area.
“This ugly incidence which has also led to fear of commuters plying the route, if not checked can lead to a break down of law and order”, he said.
Preyor, also the Chairman, House Committee on Works, stressed the need for urgent measures to address the situation, and called for the support of his colleagues.
Also speaking, Mr Festus Okoh (PDP-Ika South), who narrated how he was robbed by the perpetrators of the illegal road blocks, said, “they are not just illegal, but criminally minded”.
The motion was unanimously adopted by the lawmakers when put to voice vote by the Speaker, Dennis Guwor.
The lawmakers also called for the constitution of a taskforce that would ensure that traders and commuters plying the route were not molested.
