Team Nigeria Hits Budapest Hope For Amusan’s Clearance
First batch of Nigerian athletes to the World Athletics Championships landed in Budapest, Hungary, Tuesday, amidst anxious wait by officials for the clearance of world record holder in the 100m hurdles, Tobi Amusan, by the Athletes Integrity Unit (AIU).
The athletics showpiece will commence on August 19 and end on 27 of this month.
The first group of Nigerian athletes jetted out from the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos through a Turkish Airlines flight.
Athletics Federation of Nigeria’s (AFN) Technical Director, Samuel Onikeku, confirmed to Tidesports source that virtually all the athletes based in Nigeria and in the United States left for Budapest on Tuesday to acclimatise to the weather and to put finishing touches to their preparations for the championships.
The first batch of athletes from Nigeria was accompanied by the duo of Coach Tony Osheku and Gabriel Okon. Also in the team are a team doctor and a physiotherapist.
“About 80 per cent of the athletes have left for Budapest, so that they can get adequate rest,” Onikeku stated. “We are hopeful of a good outing, not only in the relays, but also in other events.
“We are expecting surprises from every angle, just like Tobi Amusan and Ese Brume did at the Oregon World Championships. Our major task would be to get as many of the athletes to the finals and of course go for the medals,” he added.
One of the athletes, 400m runner, Opeyemi Deborah Oke, looks forward to a fruitful competition in her first World Championships.
“We have prepared very well and by the grace of God, we are looking forward to having a good outing,” Oke, a former junior athlete stated.
AFN President Tonobok Okowa, who is still in Lagos, stated yesterday that he was expecting good news to come from AIU in Amusan’s case.

PH To Host 2026 NWFL Super Six
In a statement released by the league, the competition is scheduled to take place from Friday, June 5 to Sunday, June 14, 2026, with six clubs set to battle for the league title at the end of the 2025/26 season.
NWFL Chief Operating Officer, Modupe Shabi, said the choice of Port Harcourt reflects the Rivers State Government’s continued support for women’s football and its successful hosting of the league’s Annual General Assembly last year.
The Super Six tournament will feature the top three teams from Group A and Group B of the regular season competing in a round-robin format, with each club playing five matches over nine days.
Qualified teams for the competition include defending champions Bayelsa Queens, Edo Queens, Rivers Angels, Robo Queens, Nasarawa Amazons, and debutants Abia Angels.
The NWFL Premiership has produced four different winners in the last five editions, with Rivers Angels winning in 2021, Bayelsa Queens claiming the title in 2022 and 2025, Delta Queens triumphing in 2023, and Edo Queens emerging champions in 2024.
The league also urged participating clubs to comply with all competition regulations and directives ahead of the championship. The Super Six will determine Nigeria’s representative for the WAFU-B qualifiers for a place at the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League and ultimately the 2027 FIFA Women’s Champions Cup.
Teams are expected to arrive on Friday, June 5, when the draw ceremony and pre-match meeting will also take place. Matchdays are scheduled for June 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14, with rest days in between before the tournament concludes with the trophy presentation ceremony.
