Sports Minister’s Appointment Shocks Stakeholders
Top stakeholders in the sports sector on Wednesday expressed shock over the appointment of Cross River State politician, Senator John Enoh, as the Minister of Sports Development by President Bola Tinubu, Tidesports source.
The Presidency also separated the Ministry of Sports Development from Youth, unlike what it was under previous administrations.
A former member of the House of Representatives for Etsako, Abubakar Momoh, who is from Edo State, now heads the new Ministry of Youth.
Enoh represented the Central Senatorial District of Cross River State in the 8th Assembly between 2015 and 2019. Before then, he was a member of the House of Representatives for Obubra/Etung Federal Constituency between 2003 and 2015.
Apart from politics, available information on Enoh shows he owns numerous farms, where he conducts arable and livestock production, while he also runs a foundation where he provides help for people living with diabetes in Nigeria.
Regardless of his long political journey, Nigerian sports enthusiasts expressed shock at the appointment of the 57-year-old, who they say have no traceable connection with sports in the past.
Ace sports broadcaster Frank Ilaboya said, “I’m a little bit surprised because I really don’t hope he will be able prove so many people that don’t know him wrong. I want to believe that the immediate past sports minister Sunday Dare has set the template, even though there were also colossal mistakes, so I hope the new man should look at that especially now that sports has been separated from the youth ministry. Now he can focus squarely on sports development, so much is required. We are all witnesses to what the moroccans are doing with sports, with massive investments in facilities and human capital development.”
Ilaboya admitted Enoh had a huge task ahead of him in reviving the ailing sports sector.
“I think the minister has a lot ahead of him because sports is the only area that gives Nigerians joy, the only one that speaks one language. He needs to do something different, we are tired of the same old stories and mov

PH To Host 2026 NWFL Super Six
In a statement released by the league, the competition is scheduled to take place from Friday, June 5 to Sunday, June 14, 2026, with six clubs set to battle for the league title at the end of the 2025/26 season.
NWFL Chief Operating Officer, Modupe Shabi, said the choice of Port Harcourt reflects the Rivers State Government’s continued support for women’s football and its successful hosting of the league’s Annual General Assembly last year.
The Super Six tournament will feature the top three teams from Group A and Group B of the regular season competing in a round-robin format, with each club playing five matches over nine days.
Qualified teams for the competition include defending champions Bayelsa Queens, Edo Queens, Rivers Angels, Robo Queens, Nasarawa Amazons, and debutants Abia Angels.
The NWFL Premiership has produced four different winners in the last five editions, with Rivers Angels winning in 2021, Bayelsa Queens claiming the title in 2022 and 2025, Delta Queens triumphing in 2023, and Edo Queens emerging champions in 2024.
The league also urged participating clubs to comply with all competition regulations and directives ahead of the championship. The Super Six will determine Nigeria’s representative for the WAFU-B qualifiers for a place at the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League and ultimately the 2027 FIFA Women’s Champions Cup.
Teams are expected to arrive on Friday, June 5, when the draw ceremony and pre-match meeting will also take place. Matchdays are scheduled for June 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14, with rest days in between before the tournament concludes with the trophy presentation ceremony.
