AFBC Plans To Organise African Boxing League
Vice President, African Boxing Confederation, Azania Omo-Agege, says the African boxing body is hoping to stage an African boxing league soon.
Omo-Agege was recently named the interim president of the AFBC, replacing the ousted Bertrand Mendouga, 62, from Cameroon.
Mendouga was forced out of office August 6 in the presence of IBA President, Umar Kremlev, during the AFBC’s Exco meeting in Yaounde, Cameroon.
Omo-Agege, the first Nigerian to occupy the office, outlined his ambitions for boxing in Nigeria saying, “This is a very big leap for Nigeria itself, a Nigerian has never held this position. One of the opportunities we are going to have is that we are going to now have the headquarters of the AFBC in Nigeria, which is a very big thing for us in Nigerian boxing.
“It’s going to lead to a lot of development in Nigerian boxing when it comes to coaching, we’re going to have a lot of coaching courses that are up-to-date, a lot of referees and judges’ trainings, and education to upgrade them to higher levels. We are also planning to start an African boxing league,” Omo-Agege said.
As the AFBC’s Interim President, Omo-Agege will be in charge of African boxing affairs pending the election of a new president October 13, and he is keen to contest and hold the position.
“In the next two months, we will be conducting an election. We are going to conduct the full election in South Africa October 13, which is where I also hope to contest and win,” he told Tidesports source.
