NDLEA Arrests 158, Strengthens Campaign Against Hard Drugs In Bayelsa
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Bayelsa State Command, has said about 158 persons suspected of peddling illicit hard drugs have been arrested in the state between August, 2022 to date.
The State Commander of the anti-narcotic agency, Mr Mathew Ewah, stated this Wednesday during a chat with newsmen against the backdrop of the recent spate of hard drugs-related deaths in the state.
It would be recalled that about a fortnight ago, a student of the Federal University, Otuoke, in the Ogbia council area of the state, was reported to have died of an overdose of a hard drug known as colorado, popularly called colors.
This was later followed by the sudden death of another youth, which reports say was a Yenagoa-based indigene of Akwa-Ibom State, who operates a laundry shop of same hard drug.
Ewah described all hard drugs as fast-killers, noting that the command was committed in strengthening collaborations with institutions of learning, sister agencies, NGOs, faith based organizations and the general public in getting rid of illicit hard drugs in the state.
He said: “Colorado is a cocktail cannabinoid. It’s called Colorado because it was in the United States of America (USA) state of Colorado that taking of cannabis was first legalized.
“As you know in Nigeria, cannabis is an illegal and illicit drug. So, this illegal colos, upon our surveillance and efforts to get rid of illicit hard drugs, sometimes gets into the hands of some people and they overdose themselves with it.
“We’ll continue to partner the institutions of learning, especially the universities and colleges and sister agencies on the dangers of these illicit hard drugs”.
