Over 200 women from Oginigba Community in the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area have been empowered with various skills and starter packs by the Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC) in conjunction with the Karis and Eleos Foundation.
The 5-day training was part of activities marking the 70th anniversary of the NBC.
Speaking to newsmen during the presentation of awards, issuing of certificate of completion and starter packs to the successful beneficiaries, the Executive Director of David Bassey Ikpeme (DBI) Foundation, Mrs.Koko Crusto, applauded the trainees for their resilience and willingness to learn by grabbing the opportunity accorded them.
She added that the program has impacted on them basic skills required to make them useful to themselves, their families and the society.
According to her, the training, which lasted for five days, was intense, and was judged and supervised by competent instructors in attendance.
“Teachers assessment through Exams, after the training undergone by the trainees to be awarded the life changing skills”, she said.
She noted that the training was anchored on five Core areas which includes, Baking, Beading, Cosmetology Make-up, shoes Making, and Retail selling options for coca-cola stocks.
Also speaking as a special guest at the event, the Paramount Ruler of Ogingba Community, Eze Geshom B. Odum, hailed the organisers for bringing such high powered training to women of Oginigba Community.
He said such basic skills will enable the beneficiaries to become self sufficient and also fend for their families if properly utilised and applied.
On her part, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Ukel Oyagiri, urged the women not to bury the skills, but deploy them to generate income and also multiply their capital.
She said gone are the days when women sit back and expect money from men, adding that Rivers women have grown above board by contributing meaningfuIly to family growths and development both in financial inputs, morals and values.
Also, the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, represented by a Director in the Ministry, Mr Elechi Brown, thanked the organisers for the event.
He urged the women to look beyond their immediate needs and put efforts in multiplying what has been given to them as capital.
According to the commissioner, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry is open for collaboration on how to boost businesses and also encourage expert ideas on the growth of businesses in the state.
He thanked the NBC for providing satisfactory customer service to the good people of the State and the country in general.
The guests speaker, who spoke on the importance of adult education to the informal sector, said non-formal education plays an important role in alleviating poverty in the State.
He urged the 25 beneficiaries to àlso use the skills to create more jobs by expanding their trades in no distant time.
“With empowerment, the women will be able to contribute their quota to the State development”, he said adding that the informal sector now contributes meaningfully to the state and country’s GDP in general.
