People Living With Disability Seek Inclusive Govt
People Living With Disability (PWD) in Rivers State have called for quota inclusion of the disabled in education, health care system, insurance, and other areas.
Leader of the PWD, Ndifreke Andrew-Essien, who is a member of Faecare Foundation, made the call when she led her team to FIDA, Rivers office in Port Harcourt.
She said they were in the FIDA office to among other things solicit for free legal representation on a probono basis, for People Living With Disability on issues that arises from violation of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities Act 2018 and gender-based violence.
According to her, people living with disabilities should not be relegated, or be seen as object of welfare, noting that they deserve equal participation in government and institutions which are the rights of every citizen.
Andrew-Essien further urged FIDA to join them to push for Inclusive education for all and the need for PWDs to be more engaged in tertiary institutions in the State, especially the blind among them.
In her response, the Chairperson, FIDA, Rivers State, Adata Bio-Briggs, said FIDA is already providing probono services for People with disability as it is one of the strategic goals of the agency.
“We are geared towards providing free legal services for the vulnerable and also push for their inclusion in social, economic and political spheres, which as a branch we have been doing.
“Also, as a branch, we have been sensitising people on the Rivers person’s with disability welfare enhancement law of 2012″, she said.
She also noted that FIDA will work together with the foundation to ensure that whatever is not contained in the Rivers State law would be added, while noting that they will work with the River States House of Assembly to ensure that these laws are domesticated in the State.
“As a branch, we have undertaken that we would further translate this law into pidgin English. We would translate it into forms that would help both the hearing and visually impaired. We are already sensitising people on the need for inclusive education”, she noted.
