Late Ikwunado: Court Awards N75m Against Police In Rivers
A Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has awarded the sum of seventy-five million naira against the Nigerian Police in a fundamental Human Rights suit filed by the family of Late auto mechanic, Chima Ikwunado who died in police detention in 2019.
Recall that the family of the late Ikwunado filed a fundamental rights action against the Inspector General of Police, Commissioner of Police, Rivers State, Benson Adetuyi and four others following the alleged torturing to death of Chima Ikwunado by four former members of the disbanded E-crack unit of the Nigerian Police Force while in their custody.
Justice S. I Mark in her judgment awarded the cost against the defendants for rights violation.
The Tide reports that Princess Lawrence, lead lawyer to the family of Ikwunado, spoke to newsmen shortly after the court ruling.
Also speaking, Anthony Ikwunado, elder brother to the late Chima, said the family was happy that Justice has been served. He said the death of his beother has caused so much pain to the family.
Meanwhile, four dismissed police officers, Ayogu Fidelis, Eke Chibuzor, Egbunefu Felix, and Rose Georgewill, are still standing murder trial for allegedly torturing Chima Ikwunado to death, and unlawful detention and torture of Ozaze Friday , Ifeanyi Osuji and Ifeanyi Onyekwere who were arrested for driving against traffic in December 2019.
