A police officer, Emmanuel Nwakanma, has called for efficient strategies to restructure operational policing framework for effective crime prevention in Nigeria.
Nwakanma, a Chief Superintendent of Police and Principal Security Adviser to Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State, made the appeal on Friday in Umuahia at the launch of his book “Contemporary Issues in Policing”.
He described policing as germaine, adding that “no society can survive without the police”.
The officer said there was the need for application of effective policing strategies in tackling the security challenges in Nigeria.
“There is need to give the police resources such as logistics, training, funding and manpower to perform their duties”, he stated.
In his speech, Ikpeazu commended Nwakanma for writing the book, which has documented ways to tackle security challenges in the country.
The Governor said the book would play significant role in the efforts to tackle the security challenges in the country.
The Commissioner of Police in Abia, Mr Mustapha Bala, said the Nigerian Police Force has been promoting community policing to tackle issues of security.
Bala described the book as a well written literary material that would help to understand the need for partnership between security agencies and communities in fighting crime.
In a remark, Prof Onyemachi Ogbulu, Vice Chancellor, Abia State University, said securtiy remained everyone’s business, as such the book would serve as a tool for educating citizens to support the fight against crime.
Ogbulu was represented by Prof. Ogbonnaya Onuoha, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration.
The Vice Chancellor added that the book should be recommended to all law enforcement agencies in Nigeria.
Also, Prof. Uwaoma Uche, the book reviewer, said the book was a commendable attempt at resolving the challenging issues confronting policing in Nigeria.
Uche said the 281 page book was a reliable compendium, which would guide security agents and individuals to professionally respond to the dynamics of policing and insecurity.
