Palpable fear of fire explosion has gripped communities of Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State following heaps of crude oil in the communities.
A concerned Chief in one of the communities, Okey Josephus, raised the alarm over possible fire devastation of all the villages living near Nigeria Agip Oil Company’s (NAOC) pipeline.
According to him, the receding flood had dispersed numerous quantities of the crude oil from NAOC’s facility into the various communities, thereby impeding human movement in the area.
Chief Josephus, an opinion leader from Ekpeye land, appealed to NAOC to come to their aid to avoid possible loss of human lives and properties should there be any fire outbreak.
He said cleaning of the affected communities of the crude oil would mitigate the suffering of the residents, noting that communities such as Owube, Ubeta, Ula-Ubie, Egbeh, Ogoda, Oyigba, Oshika, Okogbe, Uyakama, among others, were at high risk of sudden fire out burst if not checked.
Meanwhile, our correspondent who visited some of the places reports that several compounds of the adversely affected communities were inundated by the flammable substance and their ecosystem, flora and fauna destroyed.
At Ula-Ubie, fire incidents have already occurred twice, but were fought by the community youths who used detergents, mixed with water to douse the fire each time.
A widow in the community was said to have scooped about six drums of the crude oil before she was able to gain entrance to her house as she returned from Internally Displaced Persons erson (IDP) camp to resettle.
Also at Ogoda Community, fire outbreak erupted last week where those living along Ogoda/Egbeh Road were reportedly seen packing their bags and baggages, though there was no loss of life.
It was also gathered that the illegal oil bunkering activity popularly called “kpo-fire” in the area was responsible for the wide spread of the crude oil which has became a thorn on the flesh of the residents.
Meanwhile, some people have also complained that their water wells have being adulterated by the crude oil, and the mud soil could not stick as they endeavoured to repair their mud and thatch houses destroyed by the flood, which also killed fishes in their swamp.
