RSG Tasks Water Producers On Quality, Gives Seven-Day Ultimatum For Compliance
The Rivers State Government has issued a seven-day ultimatum to water producers in the State to upgrade their facilities or risk being shut down.
The State Commissioner for Water Resources and Rural Development, Prof. Kaniye Ebeku, gave the ultimatum at a meting with water producers in Port Harcourt.
He urged water producers in the state to improve the quality of their products, describing some NAFDAC numbers allegedly obtained by some water producers as fake.
Ebeku said the government was determined to enforce all regulations and ensure that quality and standards are not compromised.
According to him, the water sector is too important to be ignored because of its health implications to the citizenry.
He alleged that some water producers in the state had no valid licences to operate, assuring that those operating illegally in the sector will be fished out and punished.
He advised those operating illegally to either resign voluntarily or face the wrath of the government.
Also speaking at the meeting, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mr Miabiye Igbiks, said far-reaching measures had been put in place by the ministry to rid the water sector of quacks.
He said the ministry had embarked on testing of water quality and production materials to ensure standardisation.
In separate speeches, chairman, Water Producers Association of Nigeria (WAPAN), Rivers State chapter, Odiri Macson, and chairman, Association of Water Borehole Drillers of Nigeria, Dr.Solomon Eluozo, pledged their readiness to support the government’s efforts in restoring sanity to the water sector.
