Stakeholders Lament PH Airport Certification Delay
After over five years since the Abuja and Lagos airports were almost simultaneously certificated in accordance with international standard by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), stakeholders and users of the Port Harcourt International Airport have expressed concern over the continuous delay in the certification of the airport.
They noted that the Port Harcourt International Airport, which is of the ranking with both Lagos and Abuja airports in terms of passengers traffic and income generation, is supposed to have been certificated long ago.
Reacting to the delay while speaking to The Tide, an expert in cargo handling at the airport, Mr Felix Uchendu, said the processes of certification of the Port Harcourt Airport has been over bloated, and cumbersome, as compared to others.
“I think that some elements of politics are playing out in the whole exercise. If not, why all this delay up till now in this certification thing?
“This airport is generating enough income, but what is happening to the income, politics is at work”, he said.
In his reaction, one of the staff of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), who spoke anonymously, said they have had several trainings and inspection over the years for the purpose of certification.
“I could not specifically say what is actually the cause of the delay as we speak now, but we will keep on doing what ever they ask us to do, and one day the airport will be certificated.
“If you watch today, you would have noticed what appeared like a mock-exercise have been done repeatedly. So, we are still waiting and doing what they want us to do”, he explained.
Also speaking, a regular passenger and user of the airport, Robert Douglas, said Port Harcourt airport was penciled to be certificated along with the Kano airport, to follow suit with the Lagos and Abuja certification.
According to him, the NCAA, being the regulatory agency, in accordance with the world aviation body, will be responsible for the certification, adding that safety and security are the Hallmark for aviation business, which, he said, the Port Harcourt airport is capable.
He also stated that the three major airports in Nigeria are that of Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, but expressed concern that it is only the Port Harcourt airport among the three that is still not certificated uptill now.
