Ijaw Diaspora Raises Funds For Flood Victims
Ijaws in the Diaspora, under the auspices of Ijaw Diaspora Council (IDC) have said they are coordinating humanitarian interventions for flood victims in the Niger-Delta region.
President of IDC, Prof. Mondy Gold, told The Tide’s source in a telephone interview that the Diaspora community shared the pains of their kith and kin at home and empathised with them.
He said the IDC’s Director of Humanitarian Services, Dr Antonia Garner, was coordinating the emergency relief fund raising amongst its members and donor agencies.
Although Gold noted that the flood impacted about 33 states across the country, he, however, said people living in the lower Niger basin were the worst hit by flooding, as the rivers overflowed their banks and damaged some infrastructure.
He said the group planned to compliment the efforts of state governments in the Niger-Delta region, having been overwhelmed by the needs of the flood victims.
The IDC President, who applauded the resilience of the Niger- Delta people, called for urgent intervention by the Federal Government to ameliorate the sufferings of the flood victims.
