LG Boss Warns Okada Union On Incessant Fare Hike
By: Wokoma Emmanuel
The Chairman of Okrika Local Government Council, Hon. Akuro Tobin, has decried the incessant increase in fares by motorcycle riders in the local government.
In an emergency meeting he held with the local government chapter of Okada Riders’ Union at the council secretariate in Okrika, the council boss urged them to consider the pain on the people.
Noting that the hardship was brought about by the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government since 2015, he stated that the okada riders do not have the monopoly to hike prices.
According to him, the riders do not have “the sole mandate to increase fare without liaising with the authority. The speedboat drivers union consulted with the council and a resolution was arrived at before they were allowed to make adjustment”.
Tobin urged the union’s executives to, as a matter of urgency and necessity, implement the new transport fare structures and drive it to its members consciousness in order not to go contrary.
Failure to adhere to it, he stated, will attract penalties which will include impounding their motorcycles.
He explained that defaulters will leave him with no alternative than to set up a task force to oversee the implementation of the transport fare structures.
The Okada Riders’ Union Chairman, Mr Minainyo Tamuno thanked the council boss for his leadership prowess and magnanimity.
He assured him that the union will swiftly make downward review of their services and work with the template given to them by the council chairman.
