Volleyball: Nigeria Beats Libya To Qualify For Semifinals
The country’s U-19 men’s volleyball team has qualified for the semi-final of the ongoing U-19 African Nations Volleyball Championship holding in El Jadida, Morocco.
In a match that saw the defending champions dominate from start to finish, Nigeria defeated Libya in three straight sets at the quarterfinals to book a spot in the semis.
The team, led by Coach Vincent Unogwu, is yet to lose any match at the tournament. This easy victory was necessary, as Nigeria needed five sets to put away Tunisia in their last match. The team finally defeated Tunisia 3-2 (25-21, 26-24, 19-25, 23-25, 15-12), ending their rival’s hope for a medal and qualification for the world championships holding later this year.
Archrivals, Morocco, will be looking to take its revenge on the Eagles, as the team lost to Nigeria in the final last year. Nigeria had easily won that match in three straight sets and will also be looking to repeat same feat when they meet again, this time on home soil.
The Eagles need to win, or at most, place second to qualify for the world championships.
All eyes are on the boys, as they remain the country’s only hope of masking the world championships, as both the men U-21 and girls U-19 performed woefully and did not make it to the medal winning spots.
Nigeria finished top with eight points, winning all the group matches, while Tunisia placed second with seven points.
