LG Boss Lauds Group On Free Medical Outreach
By: Theresa Frederick & Wokoma Emmanuel
The Chairman of Asari-Toru Local Government Area, Hon. Onengiyeofori George, has lauded the “Rivers Equity Group”, a Non-Governmental, Organisation, for organising a free medical outreach in the local government.
In appreciating the gesture of the group for the exercise, George, specifically thanked the leader of the group, Hon. Clapton Ogolo, a former Commissioner for Chieftaincy and Community Affairs in the State.
The free medical, outreach with emphasis on eye-related issues and distribution of over 400 glasses, also had a public lecture on the Electoral Act with the theme: ‘SIMplify Your Health Status’.
This, he said, is the first edition among local governments in the State, saying that it will be extended to other LGAs.
While addressing beneficiaries, Hon. John Nally, a member of the group, noted that the group was there to attend to the medical needs of those in attendance, adding that at the appropriate time, the group will unfold its full agenda to Rivers people.
Buttressing the importance of sight, an expert, Dr Aluge, emphasised on the need for early detection of challenges to the eyes.
Such challenges, she said, include cataract, growth around the eye caused by sun, wind and dust, shortsightedness, and blurry vision.
Aluge, an optician from the “Insolar Eye Clinic”, said all identified cases that required glasses, drugs and counselling were handled for free, while graver cases were referred to specialist hospitals/clinics for maximum care through surgical procedures.
Also speaking, Hon. Daisy West, a former member of the Rivers State House of Assembly, lauded the council boss for not just attracting and opening his doors for such an opportunity, but also actively participating to the point of playing key roles in the success of the exercise.
West, a former Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) Commissioner, expressed optimism that “ASALGA people will be very grateful to God, the sponsors and the Rivers Equity Group for the magnitude of effort put into restoring people’s sight.”
