NYSC Scandal: SAN Wants Stella Oduah Recalled, Prosecuted
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and human rights lawyer, Mr Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, has called for the recall and prosecution of the Senator representing Anambra North, Stella Oduah.
Adegboruwa also maintained that Oduah should be barred from seeking any elective positions and made to refund salaries and allowances she received as the Aviation Minister during former President Goodluck Jonathan administration and Senator.
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) had in a letter replying to a request by the Concerned Anambra North Peoples Democratic Party Stakeholders said Oduah did not have a valid NYSC certificate.
The PDP group, which alleged that Oduah claimed her NYSC certificate got missing in transit “to scale through ministerial and senate screening formalities,” requested the service to validate the claim.
In his response, the Director General of the NYSC said though Oduah was mobilised for the national service in 1982/83 and deployed to Lagos State, she absconded after the orientation and never completed the service.
“The consequence of this is that she is not qualified for the issuance of the certificate of national service,” the Director General wrote in the letter dated 24th May, 2022 and signed on his behalf by Eddy Megwa.
In 2014, Oduah reportedly deposed to an affidavit and obtained a police extract where she stated that she sometime in 2010 while in transit from Akili in Ogboru Local Government Area to Abuja, discovered that some of her personal belongings were missing.
Commenting on the NYSC revelation in an interview with our source, Adegboruwa said the senator, whose case is similar to that of Kemi Adeosun, former Minister of Finance, should be arrested and tried for perjury.
He said: “The court position on Adeosun’s case is that possession of NYSC certificate or even participation in that scheme is not a condition for seeking an elective office. But if a person swears on oath that she participated but the certificate got lost and the agency said it didn’t have her record or she didn’t participate and she has lied on oath, that is perjury. She should be liable to be tried for lying on oath.
“If she used that certificate to be elected as Senator, people should be able to go to court to reverse her election and she should refund all the salaries and allowances she has collected for that particular period and ensure that she is prosecuted by relevant law enforcement agencies.”

LP Crisis: Ex-NWC Member Dumps Dumps Abure Faction
Mr Ojukwu, who recently returned to the interim National Working Committee led by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman, noted that the party had 34 elected members in the House of Representatives, eight Senators, and 80 members at the state Houses of Assembly after the 2023 general elections.
“Now we lost all of them,” he said. “I don’t think we have as many as five members in the National Assembly.”
The former national officer of the LP talked to journalists in Abuja and said he chose to join the caretaker committee led by Senator Nenadi-Usman because they are now the officially recognized leaders of the Party.
“I chose to work with the caretaker committee to help save the Labour Party, for the benefit of the party. I also want to use this chance to ask my colleagues at the national, state, and local government levels to come together and help rebuild our party.
“Another election is around the corner. We lost everything we have. They have left to other political parties. So I’ll reach out to all my friends in the other group to get together and work on making this party stronger again.
“The caretaker committee has formed a reconciliation committee. Let’s come together and talk so that we can restore the first opposition political party in Nigeria.”
Mr Ojukwu, who was part of the Julius Abure’s group, said there are no more factions in the LP.
He added, “There is a court ruling, and since it is valid, the right people are in the correct positions.”
He urged Barr Abure and others to drop the legal cases they have filed because they are not helping the party.
“Litigations are killing political parties”, he said. “They’ve seen many political parties disappear because of legal battles, and the Labor Party is losing support every day, which makes me feel sad.”
Mr Ojukwu said he did not think joining the Senator Nenadi-Usman’s NWC was a betrayal of the Abure group, describing himself as “the oxygen” of that faction.
“I’m with this group because of the verdict. But I never betrayed anybody. Rather, I was betrayed,” he added.
