Disaster Management: NEMA Seeks Stakeholders’ Synergy
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has called for synergy with major stakeholders in managing disasters, saying the agency could not handle the challenge alone.
North West Zonal Mr Imam Garki, Coordinator of the agency, made the call while declaring open, a one-day stakeholders consultative meeting, organised by the agency in Kaduna on Wednesday.
He said the meeting was necessary to discuss issues pertaining early warning signals, and the need for stakeholders to work with NIMET climate predictions for the year as the rainy season approached.
“We have some few facts on this year’s climate predictions by our partners, as well as limitations in various sectors of the economy.
“The meeting will identify key areas where we have challenges; it is pertinent we sit together as partners and see those areas we have gaps, so we can close those gaps,” he said.
The coordinator said that stakeholders meeting were conducted periodically by the agency to address challenges and what could be done to ensure effective disaster management.
He said the meeting would also refresh the relationship between critical stakeholders to further improve synergy and strengthen network.
Garki commended all stakeholders for the role they were playing in managing disasters across the state.
“We have seen your contributions when we are faced with disasters in the state, especially in the area of response, relief delivery, search and rescue,’’ he said.
In his remarks, Mr Hafiz Mohammed, Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Kaduna Sector Command , reminded all stakeholders to improve on their safety measures while driving as the rainy season approached as there could be several challenges on the highways.
“The rains are here; our roads will be more slippery; there will be more potholes, as such we need to create awareness on the need to fix head lights, brakes, wipers and ensure everything is in order.
“With the situation going on now, your car has to be in good condition,” he advised..
Mohammed was represented at the meeting by Bala Shengul, Superintendent Rout Commandant at FRSC Kaduna.(
