‘Nigeria Needs Gas For Accelerated Industrial Dev’

The Managing Director, Shell Nigeria Gas & President, Nigerian Gas Association, Ed Ubong has called for urgent strategy to grow Nigeria’s capacity in the gas sub-sector.
This, according to him, would ensure that gas is used to spur industrial development across all parts of the country.
“We need to begin the process of retooling seasoned oil professionals to work in the growing gas sector, provide foundational training for young professionals and engineering graduates and actively supporting indigenous companies to build capacity that will allow them deliver world class services in the gas value chain,” Ubong said at the just-concluded Practical Nigeria Content Forum held in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
He noted that the country’s potential for economic growth and self-sufficiency in energy lay in gas which he said was in abundance to meet local demand and export.
“I see Nigeria taking advantage of this resource to usher it into prosperity in the next 10 years of the decade of gas.”
He described the Nigerian content policy of Shell as a model worthy of replication by key players in the industry.
“Shell’s Nigerian content initiatives predates the local content legislation and we have continued to grow in-country value addition in human capital development and support to vendors, contractors, suppliers and Nigerian service companies to position them for local and international market,” Ubong said, adding that over the past three years, Shell Nigeria Gas (SNG) has always awarded all its contracts to indigenous companies.
SNG is wholly owned by Shell and is the only gas distribution company owned by a super-major in Nigeria.
The company was recently recognised by the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) for its excellent service delivery and support to the manufacturing industry.
Shell Nigeria Gas currently operates a growing world class gas transmission and distribution network of over 150km in Nigeria with commercial agreements to supply gas to over 150 industrial customers in Bayelsa, Abia, Lagos, Rivers, Ogun and Oyo states.

Uphold Principles Of Dev, Rivers SSG Charges Tertiary Institutions

The Secretary to the Rivers State Government, Dr. Dagogo Wokoma, has urged officers of tertiary institutions in the state to continue to uphold the principles of educational development for societal growth.

The SSG noted this during a courtesy visit by the Rector and principal officers of Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic in Port Harcourt, last Friday.

The SSG, according to a statement by the Head of the Media in his office, Juliana Masi, noted that education is a catalyst for development.

“I believe this institution will continue to grow and become a central place of learning and development,” he said.

Also speaking, the Rector, Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, Dr. Moses Neebee, said the projects initiated by Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s administration are ready for commissioning.

He said the polytechnic was accredited by the National Board of Technical Education and the Federal Ministry of Education, and is therefore ready for greater impact in the educational sector.

The Rector thanked Governor Siminalayi Fubara for timely execution of projects and welfare of staff in the institution, and appealed to the State Government for further support.

“We thank His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara for fulfilling his promise in the polytechnic by ensuring the execution of projects and the welfare of staff”, he said.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Rivers State Council, has called on the Rivers State Government to urgently recruit personnel into government-owned media establishments to address the acute shortage of staff caused by the retirement of many experienced workers.

The Union said the persistent manpower deficit has continued to affect the efficiency and productivity of state-owned media organisations, stressing that prompt recruitment would strengthen information dissemination and improve service delivery across the sector.

The resolution was part of a communiqué issued at the end of the State Congress of the Union held at the Ernest Ikoli Press Centre, Port Harcourt, recently.

For Etim Effiong Queen , survival meant making an impossible choice: leaving her daughter behind to save her from a tradition she feared would change their lives forever.

Born into a Christian family in Cross River State, Queen was raised by her widowed mother after her father died when she was just 10 years old.

Her mother endured harsh widowhood rites and struggled to provide for her three children, instilling in them the value of education and independence.

Determined to build a better future, Queen earned a degree in Botany from the University of Calabar and later moved to Lagos, where she met and married Ikale Usang Imong in 2015 despite opposition from his family.

The couple’s marriage appeared stable, and they welcomed three children—two boys and a girl.

But after the birth of their daughter in 2022, Queen noticed a sudden change in her husband’s family, who became unusually warm and attentive.

Narrating her sister’s ordeal, Etim Victoria Effiong, stated things started crumbling when her sister’s daughter approached her third birthday.

According to Victoria, her sister’s husband informed her of a family tradition requiring both mother and daughter to undergo circumcision when a female child turned three. Shocked, she refused, insisting the practice was against her beliefs.

“Her decision sparked months of conflict. As pressure mounted and the date for the alleged ritual drew closer, Queen fled with her children and went into hiding” she added.

She claimed that threats followed, including warnings from her sister’s husband, who insisted that she and her daughter would be forced to undergo the ritual.

“Efforts to seek protection proved futile, leaving her feeling isolated and vulnerable.

“My sister’s ordeal deepened when our elder sister, whom we see as a mother figure, died after a confrontation linked to the family’s search for her whereabouts.

“With nowhere left to turn, Queen sought refuge through her church. Congregation members helped her remain hidden.

“The escape came at a heartbreaking cost. To avoid detection, she left her young daughter in the care of trusted church members.

“But since then no knows her whereabout. She has been missing since then. All efforts to reach contact her has proven abortive. I am urging the police, through this medium, to help us search for her” she added.
