Rivers NAWOJ Championing The Cause Of Women

Since the inception of the current executive leadership of the Nigeria Association Of Women Journalists in Rivers State, led by Comrade Susan Serekara-Nwikhina, the leadership boat has continuously sailed to different directions of life, like one on a rescue mission. Issues of women , have featured prominently not only in their daily discussions, but also in their prioritised actions and programs.
From collaborative efforts to single handedly championing a course, activities of this great body rent the air on daily bases and trust me, NAWOJ Rivers has at the moment, become a household name in the lips of many in the state.
Just recently, Rivers NAWOJ Intervened in Quadruplets Mother’s Plight. A mother of quadruplets, Mrs Comfort Isaac’s cry for help was answered when the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) in the State in collaboration with a non-governmental organisation, Susan Brown Foundation visited her and her new born babies.
The mother of three who prior to the delivery of her quadruplets was homeless as her batcher residence was demolished with no tangible source of livelihood, received succour from this great body of women Today, this body seems to be attracted to the plight of women under the scourge of Cancer.
Ofcourse we all know that once the case of Cancer is established in a human, most especially breast Cancer, what taumatises the patient is not only the pains she fears to go through, the amount of money involved in securing treatment is better imagined than experienced.. Most women undergo surgery for breast cancer and many also receive additional treatment after surgery, such as chemotherapy, hormone therapy or radiation. Chemotherapy might also be used before surgery in certain situations. The fear of embarking on a medical venture an established financial muscle to sustain and complete, has caused many breast Cancer patients their lives, giving the enigma, a monstrous posture, it ordinarily does not wear.
Moved by the pains of many women in the state who are suffering from varying degrees of breast cancer and are unable to access treatments due to poverty, the Nigeria Association of Women Journaists, NÀWOJ, in Rivers State, recently led a delegation to the Rivers State Ministry of Health to assiset women living in the state to access free cancer treatments. ,
The body, led by its chairman, Mrs Susan Serekàra-Nwikhina, called on the Commissioner for Health, Prof Chike Princewill, within the week basically to intimate him about the plight of women living with cancer in the state.
While responding to their request, Prof Princewill hinted that the State Governor, Bar.Nyesom Wike, is passionate about saving lives and has shown so much commitment in the Health Sector. He explained that the governor’s concern over the cancer incidents in the state is the reason he is building a Cancer and Cardiovascular diagonistic and treatment center in the state.
However, he expressed dismay that so many women in the state have died of breast cancer largely because they resorted to drinking concoctions instead of seeking medical help and urged NAWOJ to partner with the ministry in educating women on health issues, enjoining them to ntensify health awareness campaigns.
The Commissioner warned women to desist from drinking various things they drink on their Kidneys and liver cells in the name of treating cancer.
In another development, the body of women journalists in the state within the period under review, has solicited the cooperation of some religious bodies and philanthropists in their fight against breast cancer.
In a meeting with the founder of Omega Power Ministry (OPM) Apostle Chinyere Chibuzor, the chairman called on the man of God to assist NÀWOJ in her fight against breast cancer.
Responding, Apostle Gift Chinyere lauded NÀWOJ for her proactive measures in addressing the issues of women and girls in the society and lamented at the rate at which women die because of cancer.
He wondered why government at all levels cannot make adequate provisions for diseases such as cancer since early detection saves life , stressing that health issues are supposed to be the priority of our leaders.
The man of God who chronicled his enormous projects aimed at saving lives, promised to support NÀWOJ in addressing the issues of women.
