Inflation Rate Falls To 16.63% – NBS
The rate of inflation in Nigeria has declined for the sixth consecutive month to 16.63 per cent in September, which is its lowest level since January this year, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has said.
The Bureau, in its Consumer Price Index released on Friday, said the inflation rate fell by 0.38 per cent from 17.01 per cent in August.
The drop in headline inflation began in April when it fell to18.12 per cent from 18.17 per cent in March.
According to NBC, the urban inflation rate increased by 17.19 per cent (year-on-year) in September 2021 from 17.59 per cent recorded in August 2021, while the rural inflation rate increased by 16.08 per cent in September 2021 from 16.45 per cent in August 2021.
It said farm produce such as bread, cereals, cocoa, meat, coffee, tea and cocoa drove food inflation, fell to 19.57 per cent in September from 20.30 percent in August.
Other items that led to the rise in the composite food index in September included oils and fats, yam and other tubers, fish, potatoes, milk, cheese and egg.
“On month-on-month basis, the food sub-index increased by 1.26 per cent in September 2021, up by 0.20 per cent points from 1.06 per cent recorded in August 2021”, the NBS stated.
The Statistician-General of the Federation, Simon Harry, said the fall in the inflation rate signalled an improvement in government performance and more favourable economic conditions.
“The inflation rate in Nigeria has maintained a consecutive decline in year-on-year for a period of six consecutive months, starting from March 2021 to August 2021”, he said.

Navy Intercepts 17,000 Litres Of AGO, Recovers 24,000 Litres Of Stolen Crude In Rivers
The Navy also recovered approximately 24,000 litres of product suspected to be stolen crude oil and dismantled facilities believed to have been established for crude oil theft in separate operations in the state.
A statement signed by the Director, Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, personnel of the Forward Operating Base (FOB), Bonny, acted on credible intelligence about attempts by suspected criminals to establish illegal connections to oil infrastructure in the Bethel Community axis of Bonny Local government area.
Folorunsho said the operation led to the discovery of an illegal refining site, two pits containing approximately 24,000 litres of suspected stolen crude oil and extensive hoses believed to have been installed to facilitate crude oil theft.
He said the intervention disrupted the emerging criminal operation before it became fully operational, denying the suspected economic saboteurs the infrastructure required to sustain their activities and inflict further losses on the nation.
In a separate operation, personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) PATHFINDER intercepted a speedboat conveying approximately 17,000 litres of suspected illegally refined AGO along the Onne-Okrika waterways.
According to the statement, the recovered speedboat and suspected illegally refined petroleum product were handled in accordance with established anti-crude oil theft procedures, while efforts were ongoing to identify and apprehend those connected with the illegal activity.
Folorunsho said the operations demonstrated the Navy’s sustained commitment to disrupting the illicit petroleum supply chain, denying economic saboteurs freedom of action and protecting Nigeria’s critical oil and gas infrastructure from criminal exploitation.
He added that the Navy would continue to conduct intelligence-driven operations under Operation DELTA SENTINEL to dismantle illegal refining infrastructure, combat crude oil theft and illegal bunkering, protect the maritime environment and safeguard Nigeria’s economic interests.
