Buhari Must Affirm Integrity With Electoral Reforms-Lawyer
Former Chairman of Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area and lawyer, Tamuno Williams has tasked the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to show its integrity by effecting the new electoral bills.
Part of the new bill is to transmit election results electronically, as it has attracted debate and rancour in the National Assembly.
Making his view public in a phone in radio programme organised by Silverbird Communications at the weekend, Barrister Williams said the transmission of election results via electronic means will cut down manipulation and rigging.
He insisted that apart from the call to reform parts of the electoral process, the country also need a new political culture.
“As far as I am concerned, election is a process, and so we need a new political culture that will drive the new reforms,” he said.
As far as he was concerned, the system will be manipulated if the people remain in their old orientation that election must be won at all cost.
The most important aspect of the reform in the view of Williams should be that the peoples vote count, and the fear of rigging is minimised.
On the fear expressed whether the facilities are available for the new electronic relay of results, the lawyer said experts should be engaged but that what is important should be upgrading to meet current challenges.
He maintained that even advanced countries still have those challenges, but that what is key is integrity of those managing the system.
