Court Jails Two Women 25 Years In Prison In PH
A Magistrate Court sitting in Port Harcourt has sentenced two women to 10 and 15 years’ imprisonment for committing the offence of felony, conspiracy, child theft and trafficking of a four-year old Uwana Emmanuel, at Umudogo Village in Igbo-Etche on July 19, 2018.
Delivering his judgement, Chief Magistrate Felicitas Amanze, convicted Favour Ifeoma Godwin, who is the 1st Defendant in the case, to 15 years’ imprisonment on count one to three, to run concurrently, while the 3rd Defendant, Ada Ogbonna Ebere, was sentenced to 10 years on count four with hard labour, which will run consecutively.
Amanze also discharged and acquitted the 2nd Defendant, Kodirichi Nwankwo, who gave birth to a baby boy while in Port Harcourt prison during the period of the trial of the case.
The magistrate said the court had pity on her little boy who is two years’ old, noting that the court would not further inflict pains on the innocent child for the crime committed by the mother who has been remorseful all through the trial.
The judgement further mandated the 2nd Defendant, Kodirichi Nwankwo, to sign an undertaking to be of good behaviour, and to report to court every month with the baby for two years.
Speaking to The Tide, Counsel representing FIDA Rivers State, Esther Achor-Korienta, said the judgement was well-deserved by the convicts as it would serve as a deterrent to others who may be involved in child theft and trafficking.
