C’River Migration Agency Disowns Human Trafficking Flyers
The Cross River State Migration Control Agency has disowned online flyers advertising job and study placements abroad.
The Director-General of the agency, Michael Abuo, made this known in a statement while reacting to the observation by Efik Leadership Foundation in a letter to the Director General, NAPTIP Headquarters, Abuja titled, ‘Re: Government Facilitated Labour Trafficking’ signed by Chairman, Board of Trustees Efik Leadership Foundation, Richard Duke.
According to the foundation, “We have recently come across some online advert banners by some persons who claim to be officials of an agency known as the Cross River State Migration Control Agency.
“In the said adverts they invite applications from young citizens to apply through them for job placements and work and study opportunities in some foreign countries.
“We have our strong doubts about the offers. These adverts look quite suspicious like trafficking in persons being aided and abetted by the state agency. We equally wonder how this state agency would protect the beneficiaries when taken abroad and maltreated by the host companies? It is also sketchy to us what the state government intends to achieve with this arrangement.
“In the present circumstance, we hereby call on your agency to speedily investigate these claims and take all necessary steps to prevent hapless citizens from being trafficked or otherwise misled or defrauded.”
Responding, Abuo said in the statement, “The attention of our agency has been drawn to certain reports and comments about our yet to be launched decent jobs and work study programme in the EU, U.S. and Canada which is a component of Cross River State Migration Summit holding on the 22nd of April, 2021 at Transcorp Hotel, Calabar”.
