Rotary Promises To Step Up Environmental, Health Campaign
The Rotary Club of Port Harcourt, Phoenix District 9141 has promised to step up its environmental and health awareness campaign in Port Harcourt city and its environs.
This was disclosed at a menstrual hygiene seminar organised by the club for young female students of Community Secondary School Rumuorolu in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.
Project Director of the club, Uwem Effiong who spoke to The Tide during the event, said the seminar was necessitated by the effect of environmental pollution and health hazards associated with menstruation.
He said the programme was to sensitise the children on the need for personal hygiene and cleanliness as well as disregard all forms of religious and superstitious beliefs usually associated with menstruation.
Also speaking, the incoming president of the club, Benedrine Agbota, said the seminar was timely in view of superstition surrounding menstruation by women in the society.
Agbata said the programme was to also promote cleanliness among the children adding that as young girlss there is need for them to be taught the value of cleanliness as personal hygiene.
He said the club has embarked on several peoples oriented projects in the pasts such as tree planting campaign in some communities in the state as well as skills acquisition programme for some youths in Rivers.
Agbata said the club needed the supports of public spirited individuals, non-governmental organisations and others to do more for the society.
Speaking with The Tide the Vice Principle Admin of the school, Mrs Azu Nnebunhe Thelma, praised the club for its numerous efforts to improve the sanitary and health conditions of the school.
Mrs Azu said the seminar was timely as most of the students aged between 12 and 13 needed to know themselves as they grew into adulthood.
Highlights of the event were the distribution of pads to over 60 students in the school.
