HYPREP Assures Proper Execution Of Water Projects In Ogoni
The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Pro-ject (HYPREP), has assured that contractors handling the ongoing water projects in six locations in Ogoniland in Rivers State would deliver them according to specification.
The Chairman, Board of Trustees, HYPREP, Mr. Mike Nweilaghi, gave the assurance during the flag-off of the projects in Kpean Community in Khana Local Government Area recently.
He said the board which is responsible for approving funds for execution of projects in HYPREP would ensure that funds would only be released to contractors that have shown proofs of competence in executing the water pro-jects according to specification.
He assured that the execution of the water projects would not be business as usual, as the board would ensure strict monitoring and supervision of the projects, and release funds to only contractors who deliver quality and standard jobs.
Also speaking at the event, the Minister of Environment, Dr Muhammad Mahmood Abukakar, recalled that the Federal Executive Council had recently approved N6.4 billion for execution of water projects in the four Ogoni local government areas of Rivers State including Gokana,Tai, Khana and Eleme, and hinted that the projects are sited in six locations in Ogoniland.
The minister, who flagged off the water projects, said as part of the recommendations of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Report, HYPREP has put machinery in place for the training of 400 Ogoni women, as part of measures to restore the livelihoods of the people of the area.
The Acting Project Coordinator of HYPREP, Prof Philip Shekwolo, said the water projects, which he described as a dream come true, would go a long way in improving the living conditions of the people of Ogoni when completed, and urged the people of the area to always support and cooperate with the agency to deliver on its mandate.
