RSG Restates Commitment To Unified Taxation
The Rivers State Government has assured that it would continue to protect the interest of the public in terms of tax revenue generation.
The Chairman of the Rivers State Internal Revenue Service, Mr. Adoage Norteh gave the assurance in an interview with The Tide, at the weekend, following a protest by some commercial bus drivers in Port Harcourt over alleged extortion by he officials of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in the state.
Norteh, who frowned at the extortion by NURTW, said the government would not allow the tax system to be a difficult one for tax payers.
He reiterated that the unified taxation system was to help lessen the burden on transporters in the state.
It would be recalled that commercial bus drivers plying the Slaughter, Akpajo, Elelenwo and YKC routes had taken to the streets, last Wednesday, over an alleged extortion by a group of people who run a private motor park in the area.
Some of the drivers told The Tide that the operators of the parks collected an illegal daily sum of N3,100 from each of the over 200 commercial bus drivers using the parks.
The drivers announced their absolute support for the Rivers State Government’s unified ticketing system, saying it was cheaper and made life easier for them
They appealed to the government to wade into the matter and stop private citizens from extorting the drivers of their hard-earned money.
