Fadama Empowers 554 Farmers In Edo
The Edo State office of Fadama III Project Additional Financing, says it has empowered no fewer than 554 farmers in rice value chain in the State.
The Project Coordinator of the programme in the state, Mr Edward Izevbigie, told newsmen in Benin yesterday that the initiative was to empower farmers to cultivate one hectare of land per farmer annually.
Izevbigie said that 12 Production Clusters (PCs) and 55 Production Groups (PGs) were supported across the three senatorial districts.
“In Edo South, 280 farmers were empowered to cultivate 280 hectares of rice in Iguoriakhi in Ovia South and Iguomo/Aideyanba communities in Ovia North East local government areas of the state.
“In Edo Central, 92 farmers were empowered to cultivate 92 hectares of rice in Illushi community in Esan South East local government area.
“In Edo North, 182 farmers were empowered to cultivate 182 hectares of rice in Okugbe-Agenebode in Etsako East and Warrake in Owan East local government area,” he said.
Izevbigie said that the state government was in partnership with Syngentia Nigeria Ltd, for the supply of inputs and agro chemicals for the project.
He said that the company supplied farmers with Faro-44 long rice seeds which have a high germination rate of about 100 per cent and maturity period of three months.
He, however, disclosed that the state government had also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Agrotek Nigeria Ltd. as off-taker of all the produce after harvest.
The coordinator said that in line with the MoU, produce would be bought at the prevailing market prices.
Izevbigie said that the company had the capacity to process 40 metric tonnes of rice per day.
He said that the project was currently ongoing in Edo because the state government met the eligibility criteria including the payment of counterpart fund from 2017 to date.
