WADFU: Deaf Eagles Depart For Tournament In Sierra Leone
The national deaf football team, known as “Deaf Eagles”, yesterday departed the country aboard Africa World Airline (AWA) for the 8th West Africa Deaf Football Union (WADFU) tournament in Sierra Leone.
Amuda Ibrahim, Director, Nigeria Deaf Sports Union (NDSU), told newsmen that the contingent comprising 15 players and one official left from Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.
Tidesports source reports that Nigeria alongside hosts Sierra Leone, Senegal, Guinea, Ghana, Mali and Burkina Faso will feature in the WADFU tournament holding in Freetown from September 27 to October 6.
“The first batch of players comprising 15 players and national coach, Banjo Kamiludeen, left this morning through the Murtalla Mohammed International Airport, Lagos for the deaf football tournament taking place in Sierra Leone.
“It’s a thing of joy that at last the Deaf Eagles are able to make it to the tournament because the challenges encountered in the whole thing was much,” he said.
He named the players as Ishode Nelson, Uzoma Victor, Adamu Sulaiman, Bulus Emmanuel, Adaola Adegoke, Oluwafemi Solomon, Uchechi Chinonye, Ezeama Chukwudi, Joel Somidah, Charles Jonah, Bello Shuaibu, Oyelekan Amousa, Olatunji Samson, Yakubu Ahamadu and Yau Elsaleh.
According to him, the remaining three players who could not secure seats would join the others today, adding that they were able to secure only 16 seats in the flight.
Meanwhile, Kamiludeen, national coach of the Nigeria Deaf Football Association (NDFA), said that the players had trained well and were in good shape for a victorious outing in the tournament.
He said that necessary preparations were thoroughly done and that the boys were happy to go fly the country’s flag and lift the tournament’s trophy to book a place in Africa Nations Cup.
“We are battle ready, the boys are excited that they are going to represent their country, Nigeria and we are assuring the nation that we will deliver.
“The tournament is also a qualification event for the Africa Deaf Nations Cup, so our target is to lift this trophy which will guarantee us qualification to the Africa Nations Cup,” he added.
Tidesports gathered that Nigeria Deaf Eagles rank number one by WADFU rankings and have made five outings in the annual tournament and also are three times champions and two times runners up.

PH To Host 2026 NWFL Super Six
In a statement released by the league, the competition is scheduled to take place from Friday, June 5 to Sunday, June 14, 2026, with six clubs set to battle for the league title at the end of the 2025/26 season.
NWFL Chief Operating Officer, Modupe Shabi, said the choice of Port Harcourt reflects the Rivers State Government’s continued support for women’s football and its successful hosting of the league’s Annual General Assembly last year.
The Super Six tournament will feature the top three teams from Group A and Group B of the regular season competing in a round-robin format, with each club playing five matches over nine days.
Qualified teams for the competition include defending champions Bayelsa Queens, Edo Queens, Rivers Angels, Robo Queens, Nasarawa Amazons, and debutants Abia Angels.
The NWFL Premiership has produced four different winners in the last five editions, with Rivers Angels winning in 2021, Bayelsa Queens claiming the title in 2022 and 2025, Delta Queens triumphing in 2023, and Edo Queens emerging champions in 2024.
The league also urged participating clubs to comply with all competition regulations and directives ahead of the championship. The Super Six will determine Nigeria’s representative for the WAFU-B qualifiers for a place at the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League and ultimately the 2027 FIFA Women’s Champions Cup.
Teams are expected to arrive on Friday, June 5, when the draw ceremony and pre-match meeting will also take place. Matchdays are scheduled for June 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14, with rest days in between before the tournament concludes with the trophy presentation ceremony.
