Behold, Five Fast Rising Nollywood Actresses To Watch In 2019

2018 was a roundly successful year for the Nigerian movie industry and a handful of actors and actresses got their big break, while others cemented and elevated their status.
Among the fastest rising Nollywood actresses who had a successful 2018 and will be hoping to extend the good fortunes in 2019 are:
Adesua Etomi: Since Adesua burst into the scene some two years ago, she has maintained a steady rise in the movie industry. She became famous after her starring role in the movie, “Knocking On Heaven’s Door.” However, the movie that actually shot her to limelight is “The Wedding Party (2016) where she starred alongside her hubby, Bankole Wellington, popularly called Banky W.
The elegant actress elevated her status as one of the fastest rising Nollywood Stars in 2018 with a handful star features some of which include “King of Boys,” Memoirs of 4, “Date Night” and more. She played the lead role in most of these movies. All things being equal, she is certainly one of the leading contenders to the ‘Best Actress’ accolade later this year.
Linda Ejiofor: She surely had a year to remember in 2018, both at the professional and personal levels. She became a household name in the industry with her starring role in the on going movie series – Tinsel, towards the end of the year, she crowned her professional success with a grander personal achievement.
She got married to fellow Nollywood movie star, Ibrahim Suleiman and for some reasons, her marriage further enhanced her popularity as well as that of her husband. Notable features of Linda in 2018 include: “Memoirs of 4,” “Chief Daddy,” “Tinsel” (series) “Rumour Has It” (series) etc. With a growing fan base she is definitely one of the actresses to look out for in 2019.
Belinda Effah: Belinda Effah is without doubt, one of the top rated stars of Nollywood today and while she has been in the industry for close to 15 years now, she is yet to break into the Nollywood A-class set up in 2013. She won the AMAA’s Most Promising Act. Since then she has not been able to take it one step further to the Best Actress category. Could 2019 be her year? Time will tell.
Belinda starred in a handful of movies in 2018 some of which include “Purpose Flame,” “Udemmenic,” I cannot “Fall In Love” and more.
Mary Lazarus: Mary Lazarus is one of the star actresses of new generation Nollyood, she started her career in showbiz since way back in 2002 when she left her corporate job to become a model. In 2009, she made her entry into Nollywood and went on to feature in a movie titled “Waiting Years,” directed by John Njama.
She has made a slow, but steady rise in the Nigerian movie scene, and she is today one of the most sought-after actresses in the industry so far in her decade and career. 2017 and 2018 have been her most successful years. All things being equal, 2019 is expected to follow the trend. Some of her movies in 2018 are “Downing, Married in Hell,” A Wildfire and more.
Zainab Balogun: Zainab Balogun has within the space of three to four years shot herself to the top of the Nigerian movie scene, she started her career in showbiz (as a model) at the age of 16 and she has enjoyed significant success in her chosen line of work.
The UK born actress made her entry into Nollywood a few years back. Within the period she has featured in some top grossing movies some of which include: the Wedding Party (IY2) Royal Hibiscus Hotel, “A soldier’s Story” and more.
Her most recent star feature is perhaps her role in ‘Syvia’ where she played the lead character named Syvia. Other notable 2018 features of Zainab Balogun include, “Chief Daddy” and God calling.
The actress was recognised by future awards for a successful year in the Nigerian movie industry and 2019 obviously shows more promise for her.

Uche Ogbodo Shares Reason Bambam’s Marriage Ended

Uche Ogbodo defended her colleague, Bambam, amid allegations that she left her marriage after going under the knife.
The Tide Entertainment reports that  the mother of three stated that no woman would leave a man because of a body makeover.
The actress also shared what she believes might have gone wrong in the marriage that led to its end, and sent a message to men.
Nollywood actress Uche Ogbodo has shared her thoughts on reality show star Bambam, whose real name is Oluwabamike Olawunmi, amid her alleged marriage crisis.The former Big Brother housemate was recently seen dancing and enjoying herself at a party, sparking rumours about her marriage.

Critics claimed that her body makeover was one of the reasons she allegedly left the marriage and noted that she was still out in public with the video of her club outing.

Reacting to the allegations,  Ogbodo came to Bambam’s defence. She stated that no woman would leave her marriage simply because she went under the knife. According to her, it is the man who drives a woman to leave.

The mother of three further explained that no woman willingly leaves a marriage she has invested in over many years. If a woman does leave, it is the man’s fault, possibly due to abuse that she chooses not to disclose publicly.

She added that a man must have shown the woman disrespect or failed to nurture the marriage.

Ogbodo emphasised that if a man refuses to love, protect, and give peace to his wife, the responsibility for the breakdown rests entirely with him.

It would be recalled that Uche Ogbodo also recently underwent cosmetic surgery and shared videos with her fans online,

The actress had remained on the lips of many Nigerians following her role in the trending movie Love in Every Word.

Oscars Set 2027 And 2028 Dates Ahead Of 100th Edition In 2028

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled dates for both the 99th Academy Awards and its landmark 100th ceremony. The back-to-back events, set for 2027 and 2028, will mark the final years of the Oscars airing on longtime broadcast partner ABC before a major shift to YouTube.

The 99th Oscars will take place on Sunday, March 14, 2027, followed by the historic 100th edition on Sunday, March 5, 2028. Both ceremonies will broadcast live at 7 p.m. ET from the iconic Dolby Theatre in Hollywood and reach audiences in over 200 territories worldwide. Looking ahead, the Academy has also confirmed a venue change, with the ceremony set to move to the Peacock Theater beginning in 2029, where it will remain through 2039.

The Tide Entertainment reports that the announcement comes amid a shifting broadcast landscape. ABC is gearing up for a packed 2027 schedule, including its debut as the home of the Grammy Awards and its first Super Bowl broadcast in over two decades. Meanwhile, this year’s Oscars telecast saw a dip in viewership, drawing 17.86 million viewers across ABC and Hulu, a 9% decline from the previous year’s five-year high.

Still, excitement around the awards remains strong. The most recent ceremony crowned Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another” as Best Picture, while early buzz for the upcoming season is already building. Anticipated contenders include the Ryan Gosling-led “Project Hail Mary,” Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Three” starring Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, and Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s “Digger” featuring Tom Cruise.

No hosts have been announced yet for either ceremony, adding another layer of anticipation to the milestone events.

In addition to confirming the ceremony dates, the Academy also released its full calendar for the 2026–2027 awards season, outlining key milestones from the eligibility period beginning January 1, 2026, to nominations voting in January 2027, and final voting in early March.
