Dr. Oyeka said that the situation is not only constituting a clog on the free flow of water but also threatening aquatic lives.
According to him it was observed that plastic waste from all over Nigeria has formed a long piles along the Atlantic coast of the Niger Delta.
He stressed the need for measures that would enhance the recycling of plastic waste in the country and congratulated the Rivers State chapter of the Institute for organising the event.
Earlier, the Rivers State Chapter Chairman of the Institute, Mr Anthony Agbakwuru said that the event was to confront environmental degradation of the Niger Delta.
“We are here to confront an issue which if left unaddressed might become a monster. We are the product of our environment and our environment in turn a product of both of our action and inaction.”
