Prof Esu Sues For Africanism
The Deputy Governor of Cross River State, Prof. Ivara Ejemot Esu, has sued for Africanism amongst Africans, especially those in diaspora, at the flag off of the 2018 Carnival Calabar second dry run which took place at the Eleven Eleven Roundabout, Calabar.
Prof. Esu who represented the Governor, Prof. Ben Ayade, in reference to this year’s carnival theme, Africanism, said as Africans, it is important to know who we are, where we are coming from and where we are going, as being oblivious of our roots would mean divergence from our purpose and greatness.
Appreciating the five Carnival Bands for a good outing of the first dry run, Esu said he hoped the second dry run would be better.
The Chief Judge of the State, Justice Michael Edem, said that in as much as Western influence threatened our roots as Africans, we should by all means keep the spirit of Africanism alive and continue to make Africans proud both home and abroad.
Eulogising the success of the Carnival Calabar through the years, the Chairman, Cross River State Carnival Commission, Mr. Gabe Onah said two things hold the credit, first, the Carnival Calabar is community based and secondly, it is backed by competent laws which the Justice ministry should be acknowledged for.
The flag-off was attended by members of the Executive Council, led by the Honourable Commissioner for Culture and Tourism Development, Mr Eric Anderson, the Special Adviser, Events Department, Governor’s Office, Hon. Ken Aklah, and other distinguished personalities.
