Research Essential For Power Sector Development – Institute
The Institute of Electrical Electronic Engineers of Nigeria has called for stronger synergy between academic institutions and industries for the promotion of research development in the Nigerian power sector.
President of the Port Harcourt branch of the institute, Engineer Isaac Adekanya, made the call while speaking with The Tide in an interview in Port Harcourt at the weekend.
He said collaboration would enhance effective reforms in the power sector as “the institutions will provide the information, while the industry will provide the funding.”
Adekanya urged the industries to take it up as a policy to sponsor students academic research to enable them come up with new innovations that will promote development in the power sector.
He pointed out that most countries of the world recorded outstanding breakthroughs in power sector development through the promotion of research.
“Power is essential for the economic development of any nation, and that is why investment in the power sector is paramount. Such investment cannot only be worth while, through the promotion of research and training of effective manpower. There is need for a stronger synergy between the industries and academic institution to achieve this objective,” he stated.
Adekanya who advocated for the review of Nigeria electricity laws, also urged the Federal Government to give opportunities to experts to make inputs in the policy formulation and planning in the Nigerian power sector.
He noted that, local content development can only be achieved in the power sector when experts made meaningful contributions in the system.
He also disclosed that states should be allowed to generate their own electricity to enhance effective service delivery, noting that the present monopolistic structure, where the Federal Government plays dominant roles cannot serve the yearning power demands of the country.
“A situation where the power needed to serve the entire nation is generated and stationed at a base in Oshogbo is not enough. The power needs of the various states differ, the test measure is for the states to be encouraged to generate their own power based on comparative advantage. Some state, are endowed with hydro potential, while others have solar and other potentials for power generation,” he said.
