NGO Recruits 200 Sanitation Marshals
A non-governmental organisation, the Obuzor Vanguard has recruited 200 persons from across the communities that make up Ahoada West Local Government Area to serve as sanitation marshals in view of the recent rain flooding of some communities.
Most of the participants in the programme came from the defunct AWELGA that was put in place during the tenure of Chief Ikechukwu Obuzor as council caretaker committee chairman.
Inaugurating the marshals at Akinima, the Ahoada West Council headquarters, Chief Obuzor who holds the Chieftaincy title of Ikegah Ekpeyelogbo, said the formation of the sanitation marshals was in response to the prediction of NIMET that the area might experience flooding and in view of the recent rain flood that had caused untold hardship to most people.
Chief Obuzor said, “the job description will include clearing of grass and maintenance of streets, roads, drains and waterways and also engage in the sensitisation of the people of Ahoada West on the harmful effects of dumping refuse indiscriminately.”
According to him, the organisation which will be given stipends at the end of every month would be an integral part of Obuzor Vanguard Organisation and will also engage in tree planting and re-orientate the people on the best environmental practices around their surroundings.
Besides the NIMET warning, Chief Obuzor also said the NGO was aligning itself with the determination of Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike to desilt the city of Port Harcourt and its environs, and other flood prone local government areas, so as to save Rivers State from imminent flood danger. He commended the marshalls for keeping faith with him even after leaving office as council chairman.
