Ministry Partners NGOs On Environmental Programmes Implementation
The Federal Ministry of Environment, says it will continue to partner with Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), to ensure effective implementation of environmental programmes in the country.
The Director, Department of Climate Change in the Federal Ministry of Environment, Dr Peter Tarfa, said this in an interview with nesmen in Abuja.
Tarfa said that the partnership would not only enhance the execution of environmental projects but would also help in mitigating the effects of climate change in various communities.
According to him, efforts to tackle environment and climate change issues need the active collaboration of all the relevant stakeholders.
“This is one of the central reasons why the Ministry of Environment sees the Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and the NGOs as strategic partners.
“The organisations have assisted government in various ways to ensure that government policies are well implemented.
“We create the enabling environment to partner with them so that they can pass the right messages on the need to protect the environment down to people at the grassroots.
“They support the government in efforts to conduct effective public sensitisation on climate change, sanitation and other environmental issues.
“Partnering with NGOs has also helped the government to tackle most of the environmental issues and challenges, even at the grassroots,” he added.
The director gave the assurance that the ministry was open to positive contributions from CSOs and NGOs, urging the organisations to make pragmatic proposals on themes that could enrich and add value to policy formulation in the country.
“Government will continue to collaborate with the NGOs to ensure that environmental policy issues are properly implemented,” he said.
Tarfa said that, government was committed to having a wider positive impact in its efforts to protect the environment and address environmental challenges, especially in the local communities.
He said that the government was also partnering with the NGOs in staging public sensitisation campaigns on the dangers of polluted environment in some communities.
Tarfa added that the aim of the sensitisation campaigns was to educate the people on the kind of activities they could engage in which would not be harmful to the environment.
