Social Vices War: SU To Partner Govt, Churches
An international interdenominational and nondenominational Bible based Ministry The Scripture Union, has pledged its commitment to partner with government, school owners, parents and churches to rid the society of social vices and moral decadence among youths.
The Regional Chairman of the Port Harcourt Region of the union, Dr Sotonibi Cookey made the pledge during a press conference at the Ernest Ikoli Press Centre, Port Harcourt, organised to mark the 150 years of corporate existence of the organisation.
He said since its existence 150 years ago, the Scripture Union had been at the forefront of global evangelism and raising of generations of Godly men and women who have made outstanding contributions in their various fields of endeavour.
Dr. Cookey said the union started in the old Rivers in 1960 among notable secondary schools before its work became consolidated in the 70s in the Port Harcourt Region, which compromised of Rivers and Bayelsa states.
As of today, he said the union, operated in many primary schools across the two states, reaching out and building the morals of over 2000 pupils, hold fellowships and devotion in about 500 secondary schools within the two states, with a students membership of 10,000.
He said the union also operated Out of School Youth Ministry through life skill education as well as provide holiday camp for students.
According to the Regional Chairman, some of the activities of the union include: Teaching Seminar, positive parenting education, production of devotionals, family life programme, leadership development programmes, among others.
He traced the moral decadence in the society today to the collapse of family structure, and emphasized that the only solution to the problems “is the foundation of Jesus Christ”.
