Don Lists Causes Of Building Collapse
The incessant building collapse in the country has been blamed on all tiers of government, contractors and professionals.
Chairman of the Committee of Directors of Works and Physical Planning of Nigerian Universities, Mohammed Sambo, made this statement in an interview with newsmen in Abuja at the weekend.
Sambo, stated that the recent collapse of a three storey building in Lagos, which resulted in fatalities and a number of casualties, was due to non-involvement of professionals in the building industry.
Furthermore, he stated that, the Procurement Act, which says, the lowest responsive bidder wins the contract, regardless of whether the rates are reasonable or not also contributes to building collapse.
He also identified corruption among some government elements who always conspire with contractors to defraud the government, while compromising standard and quality work.
Additionally, he noted that, greedy and unprofessional contractors employ the use of poor and inferior quality materials and cheap labour in their efforts to criminally maximize profit, are also contributory to building collapse.
He appealed to government to ensure that, all relevant agencies saddled with the responsibility of and ensuring compliance to standards during constructions are made to function and those found wanting punished to curb the building collapse menance, while urging property owners to always employ the services of professionals to supervise their projects.
