Rerun Polls: Monarch Warns Against Violence In Ogoni
As the re-run elections scheduled by the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) to hold December 10 in Rivers State fast approaches, Traditional Ruler in Ogoni, Rivers State, Mene Suanu Baridam, has urged the major Political Parties in the re-run to desist from actions capable of unleashing violence in Ogoni land.
Baridam, who spoke with The Tide in an interview, in Port Harcourt on Monday decried the tendency of Political gladiators using Ogoniland as a flash point for violence, noting that Ogonin’s were not at war with each other.
The traditional ruler, who is the Mene Bua Bangha in Khana Local Government Area, lamented the killings in Ogoniland in the build up to previous elections in the area and stated that, “Ogonis have over the years suffered the brunt of political struggles and should be spared from the unwarranted wastage of lives in the name of election”.
He described as a disservice”, the continuous lack of representation of Ogoni in the National Assembly, and called on politicians in the area to consider the interest of Ogonis as paramount and not to allow their partisan interest to smear the land.
The Royal father also called on youth in Ogoni to resist being used as thugs for electoral violence, but to vote for candidates of their choice and defend their votes to avoid mortgaging their consciences.
He said the Ogonis were renowned for hard work and excellence and emphasized that the future of the youth in the area, depended on education and knowledge application.
Baridam, who is also the chairman of Elders, called on all stakeholders in Ogoni to show indepth and unbiased commitment to the development of Ogoni.
The Royal father, also regretted a situation where some youth in Ogoni failed to embrace the amnesty offered by the Rivers State Government, noting that such people posted danger to the future of Ogoni.
