PH Residents Decry Recession, Inflation
Due to the current economic recession in the country, some residents of Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, have expressed deep reservations over their ability to meet increasing expectations of the fast approaching Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Chairman, BigSam Transport, Niger Delta Link, Mile 1 Park, Mr. Ngozi Williams who spoke in an interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt, said poverty was everywhere, adding that the lull in the economy has stalled preparations for Christmas.
Ngozi regretted the passenger traffic at the parks, which he said has forced transporters to reduce transport fares across most routes in the region.
He said that with the high cost of things in the markets as a result of economic recession, it would be difficult to buy clothes and shoes for the children and rice for Christmas.
A trader, Mrs Kelechi Unogu, also said, “Nothing like Christmas celebration this year, things are too expensive and there is no money to buy foodstuffs to travel home with”.
“Even if I will buy anything to manage, it will be yam because rice and garri are now very expensive for me to afford”, she said.
Also speaking with The Tide in Port Harcourt, an anonymous driver made it dear that preparation for Christmas is not in his agenda.
“Recession has made it impossible for me to have any agenda. Even the little we earn from passengers is collected from us by Policemen on the road.
“I and my family will have to manage what we have because we have no other option”, he added.
However, some Christian clerics have adviced Christians not to relent but to remain streadfast in whatever they do this period.
