Reactions Trail Call For Return Of Toll Gates
Following the recent
request made to the Federal Government by the House of Representatives to re-introduce toll gates across the country, some members of the public have bared their minds on the development.
Investigations carried out by The Tide in Port Harcourt and elsewhere indicated that while some hailed the move, others rejected same.
According to a public affairs analyst, Mr. Rufus Uchendu who spoke to The Tide, toll gates should be re-introduced and accountability be the watch word.
He explained that the aim should not be only to make money for the federal government but the process should be self accounting to the generality of Nigerians.
For Chime Obinna, a motorist who operates on the Port Harcourt Aba route, toll gates should be installed to include conveniences.
Obinna opined that while motorists are being charged for using the highways, their patriotism should be complimented by the government.
“Let them build toilets and other necessary conveniences at the toll points to enable Nigerians enjoy the dividends of democracy”, he said.
While hailing the request by the National Assembly, a cross section of heavy duty truck drivers who spoke to The Tide advised the government to first of all, fix the country’s highways.
“It would amount to insensitivity on the part of the Federal Government if they go ahead to effect collection of money at toll gates without fixing the dilapidated highways across the country”, they said.
It could be recalled that the House of Representatives made the request in view of the dwindling economic fortunes of the federal government, occasioned by the prevailing recession.
According to reports, the proceeds from toll gates if properly harnessed could go a long way in helping the federal government manage the recession bedeviling the economy.
