Engineers Task Govt, Private Sector On Local Content
The Nigerian Sociiety of
Engineers (NSE) has begun its maiden edition of the Electrical Engineering Week, in Port Harcourt.
The weeklong event which has its theme as “challenges gained and prospects of local content in electrical industry in Nigeria” was attended by engineers from across the country, including the Rivers State Commissioner for Power, Mr Mike Anwuri, who chaired the event.
The Power Commissioner who spoke to newsmen shortly after the event on issues affecting the power sector in the country, explained the controversy surrounding who replaces a faulty transformer.
Anwuri disclosed that the distribution companies are expected to effect repairs and replacement of transformers, and not consumers.
“I think corruption is endemic and is a household name and everybody claims they are right and nobody wants to claim responsibility for corruption”, he said.
According to the Commissioner, it is the sole responsibility of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) to service, repair and replace transformers as at when due.
“You know that the power sector has been unbundled and the distribution companies are supposed to live up to expectation”, he said.
Also speaking at the event, past chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Engineers, Bendy George, said encouraging locally manufactured electrical equipment would help grow Nigeria’s economy.
“Against challenges and prospects, Nigeria’s Content in electrical industry should be a welcome development”, he said.
He stated that it was public knowledge that the era of oil and gas have become a thing of the past, adding that the era of power and knowledge has come to stay.
“As you are aware, the era of oil and gas is gradually fading away and the era of power and knowledge economy have come to stay.
“We need to see how we can utilize local content in this industry, and that is why we have local manufacturers producing transformers, cables, consultants and electrical engineers”, he said.
He said until we begin to project ourselves we would not be able to improve the economy.
