PH Residents Hail Commercial Drivers’ Biometrics
Residents of Port
Harcourt and its environs have lauded the extention of biometric exercise to the commercial transport system in Rivers State.
Some of the residents who responded yesterday said the idea will bring sanity and accountability in the system.
A teacher, Charles Enyinah, said “the system will make it easy to handle issues of security because since each of the drivers has data in the system, investigation would be easier”.
Enyianh, however, frowned at the inclusion of monetary payment, saying government should have taken care of the financial involvement.
Another respondent, Jonah Steven, said the biometric exercise on commercial drivers in the state would enable government to know the number of operators in the system.
“I think that a lot of fraud goes on in the commercial transport system because operators hardly remit all that should go to the state.
“So with the biometric it would be possible to estimate what revenue the government can make from the taxes and levies coming from there”, he said.
Mr Nwobia Isioma, also commended the idea, noting that it would reduce the high level of recklessness by drivers on public roads.
Isioma explained that since personal data of each driver would be in the system, it would be easier to track down any reckless driver who thinks he can do anything and get away with it.
He further suggested that each of the drivers should also indicate the actual route he operates stressing that the biometric would bring sanity to the system.
