Consultant Cautions Drivers On Safety
Trucks and other heavy
duty drivers plying Oil Mill in Eleme junction to Onne seaport in Rivers State, have been advised to regard safety as their watchword.
A safety expert and consultant, Dr Job Akien Alli made the appeal in a chat with The Tide correspondent in Port Harcourt.
Alli said the drivers should be cautioned to always regard safety of other road users as paramount, saying that it is pertinent that some drivers of heavy duty vehicles over-take and over -speed at random, thereby putting the lives of other roads users in danger.
According to him, he observed with dismay that even some truck drivers conveying containers to their destinations do not lash them to the trucks which also poses a great threat to other motorists and people doing business along the areas.
The safety consultant said the risk involved in such careless act could be enormous as the container could fall along the road and cause harm to people as well as traffic gridlock.
Alli lamented that some have formed the habit of over-speeding not minding the condition of the road, stressing that those group of drivers ought to be cautioned by the law enforcement agents and other relevant authorities inorder to protect lives and properties of other road users.
He also condemned some rickety trucks used by some drivers in conveying conditioners and other goods at the various seaports in the state, and opined that it was an eyesore and condemnable.
The expert called on the Nigerian Police, the Nigeria Customs Services, the Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO’s) and also the Ports Security and Safety officers to take the ports security and safety officers to take precautionary measures in arresting and prosecuting such erring drivers inorder to serve as deterrent to others, adding that as the rainy season finally sets in, motorists should drive safely to avoid lose of lives and properties.
