Soberekon Cautions Avengers On N’Delta Environment
Elder statesman in Riv
ers State, Rev (Dr) Sokari Soberekon, has cautioned members of the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) against causing ecological disaster in the region.
Soberekon who said this in an interview with newsmen in Port Harcourt disclosed that continuous bombing of pipelines and other oil installations will destroy the environment of the region.
“These pipelines run across the Niger Delta and its continuous destruction will lead to the deaths of fishes and mangroves.
“The only thing we have for future generations is the environment of the Niger Delta,” he said.
The elder statesman who is popularly known as the Senior Advocate of Niger Delta (SAND) urged the Avengers to dialogue with the federal government.
“It is sad that the Avengers are not following due process in seeking redress.
“We have the National Assembly, we have State Houses of Assembly across the region, the best thing is for these Avengers to go through these institutions,” he said.
Meanwhile, Soberekon has urged for the constitution of Market Management Board by the Rivers State government.
He said that this has become necessary to forestall the incessant fire outbreaks in markets across the state.
According to him, the proposed new board will also ensure regular sanitations in markets across the state.
Rev. (Dr) Soberekon said that most markets in the state are not interested in the regular sanitations, stressing that what most of them are interested in, is money and adviced on the need for attitudinal change.
“We must keep our markets clean always to avoid the spread of diseases,” he said.
He used the occasion to call for the upgrading of the Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic to University with campuses in Degema.
