‘Dollar Exchange Rate Affects Port Activities’
Some staff of shipping
agencies in Rivers State have cried out that the exchange rate of the dollar has drastically affected their businesses and their work in the state.
The agencies staff who barred their predicaments in an interview with The tide correspondent under anonymity in Port Harcourt, on Wednesday, lamented that they only go to the office and stay till closing hour without doing anything.
According to them, there has been no traffic because of the dwindling economy and policies in the country, pointing out that most ports are empty of vessels.
They lamented that there are no activities at the ports for sometime now because of the dollar exchange rate as most importers could not transact their businesses, thereby making the shipping agencies redundant.
The agencies staff opined that the situation is putting their jobs on the line as they could no longer cater for their families due to the difficult times.
Some also complained that they found it difficult going to work, as they could not afford transport fares or purchase petrol into their cars, and appealed to the Federal Government to come to their aid and make things easy for the importers so that the shipping agencies that help transact business could survive in this perennial times.
They noted with dismay that although some ports in the west are still busy with activities, but that the rate had reduced due to the exchange rate of naira to the dollar and recent government policies that are affecting the system and making things difficult for some indigenous shipping agencies and importers.
