The Rivers State Minis-
try of Urban Development has warned that the state government will no longer tolerate roadside trading in Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor and Local Government Area.
The Commissioner for Urban Development and Physical Planning, Chinyere Igwe, issued the warning when he led officials of the ministry to dislodge roadside traders along the Bishop Okoye Street in Mile three, Diobu and Eagle Island.
He said the essence of the action by the ministry was to ensure free flow of traffic on major roads and streets in the state.
Some of the affected traders, who spoke to our correspondent, in Port Harcourt, appealed to the Rivers State Government to provide them with a place to sell their wares.
Meanwhile the Rivers State Government has inaugurated an eight member sanitation taskforce to monitor refuse contractors.
The Commissioner for Environment, Professor Roselyn Konya, while inaugurating the committee in her office, said the duty of the taskforce was to compliment the role of the ministry in checking refuse contractors who fail to carry out their duties efficiently and timely.
Konya charged members of the taskforce to discharge their duty with diligence and ensure that Port Harcourt and its environs were kept clean.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the sanitation taskforce, Paul Nwachukwu, pledged the committee’s commitment to a clean environment.
