AMATO Kicks Against N10,000 Truck Registration Fee
The Chairman of the
association of Maritime Truck Owners (AMATO), Chief Remi Ogungbemi, has enjoined the Western Ports of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to review its decision to collect N10,000 annual truck registration fee.
Ogungbemi, who made the assertion during a stakeholders meeting in Lagos said his association has no plans to key into the N10,000 truck registration fee scheme.
He said, “I advise strongly that the NPA revisits the N10,000 charge for truck registration. They have not given us the genuine reasons for collecting that money and considering the economic hardship that we are facing, we cannot pay such amount.
“We gave a restriction to our members to boycott port business, however it was just a skeletal withdrawal and the NPA is yet to fully implement the restriction of trucks.
“We hope that the decision is withdrawn”.
The AMATO boss however lauded the management of NPA for their commitment towards ensuring that only road worthy trucks do business at the ports, saying the move is a welcomed development.
He disclosed that the association had decided to withdraw such trucks but waiting to get feedback from the General Manager of Western Ports, NPA, Chief Michael Ajayi to give his verdict on the issue.
It would be recalled that crisis loomed recently at the Western Ports over the alleged collection of N10,000 annual truck registration fee, as stakeholders were not fully informed before the take-off.
