‘Rivers May Not Have Senators Till 2019’

Speaker of Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Adams Dabotorudima (right) chatting with Hon Tonye Adoki, during the sitting of the House yesterday.
Rivers State may not have
representatives in the upper chambers of the National Assembly till after 2019, a Public Affairs Analyst, Martins Ikhilae has warned.
The Appeal Court had last December nullified the election held last year and ordered for a rerun in the state, but unfortunately, some of the rerun elections were cancelled following violence that characterized the process.
Twelve out of thirty seats in the Federal House of Representatives were nullified while the three Senatorial seats were ordered for a rerun. But the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)said the Commission will not conduct further elections in the state unless the state is save.
This development has stalled the conclusion of the elections in the state. The State only has five House of Representatives in the lower chambers thereby short changing the state.
Ikhilae who spoke with The Tide in an exclusive interview in Port Harcourt said the state is losing in all ramifications since the politicians and political class are fighting over political positions.
He noted that those currently representing the state at Federal House of Representatives are lonely voices and cannot in any manner, either in majority or as individuals represent the state properly.
Ikhilae regretted that the state has been polarized either your in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or All Progressive Congress, (APC) stressing that this would lead to a total disconnection between the people and the government.
Ikhilea further noted that the state has lost more that it has gain in the last three years due to internal political wrangling, stressing that the state not to have senate representatives and some members of the House of Representatives is a minors for the state because it will not attract better representation for the state.
According to him,’’ when matters of importance concerning the state is before the floor of the house, no representative will speaks for the state.
He however urged politicians to come together and work for the development of the people and the state, stressing that the interest of the state should be paramount to all.
It would be recalled that INEC has vowed not to conduct election in Rivers State till peace is return.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Aniedi Ikoiwak stated this while declaring some of the state House Assembly results and warned Politicians to always conduct themselves in a better manner.
Many were legibly killed including a corps member working as an adhoc staff during the last rerun elections in the state.

LP Crisis: Ex-NWC Member Dumps Dumps Abure Faction
Mr Ojukwu, who recently returned to the interim National Working Committee led by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman, noted that the party had 34 elected members in the House of Representatives, eight Senators, and 80 members at the state Houses of Assembly after the 2023 general elections.
“Now we lost all of them,” he said. “I don’t think we have as many as five members in the National Assembly.”
The former national officer of the LP talked to journalists in Abuja and said he chose to join the caretaker committee led by Senator Nenadi-Usman because they are now the officially recognized leaders of the Party.
“I chose to work with the caretaker committee to help save the Labour Party, for the benefit of the party. I also want to use this chance to ask my colleagues at the national, state, and local government levels to come together and help rebuild our party.
“Another election is around the corner. We lost everything we have. They have left to other political parties. So I’ll reach out to all my friends in the other group to get together and work on making this party stronger again.
“The caretaker committee has formed a reconciliation committee. Let’s come together and talk so that we can restore the first opposition political party in Nigeria.”
Mr Ojukwu, who was part of the Julius Abure’s group, said there are no more factions in the LP.
He added, “There is a court ruling, and since it is valid, the right people are in the correct positions.”
He urged Barr Abure and others to drop the legal cases they have filed because they are not helping the party.
“Litigations are killing political parties”, he said. “They’ve seen many political parties disappear because of legal battles, and the Labor Party is losing support every day, which makes me feel sad.”
Mr Ojukwu said he did not think joining the Senator Nenadi-Usman’s NWC was a betrayal of the Abure group, describing himself as “the oxygen” of that faction.
“I’m with this group because of the verdict. But I never betrayed anybody. Rather, I was betrayed,” he added.
