Army, Media Synergy Panacea To Insurgency – COAS
The Chief of Army Staff,
Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, has said that synergy among members of the media and the Nigeria Army would go a long way to solve the problems relating to national security and insurgency in Nigeria.
The Chief of Staff said this during a two-day first quarter 2016 study period and 82 Division Media Workshop with the theme “Bridging Communication Gap between Nigerian Army and the Media” in Port Harcourt yesterday.
Tukur, who was represented by the Acting Director, 82 Division, Major General Rochas Nicholas, said that there was need for the Nigerian Army and the media to work together in the interest of the nation’s security.
He also reiterated the need to promote free-flow of information between the military and the media in the country, adding that the press had been playing a vital role in the war against Boko Haram in- surgents. Presenting the first paper on “Media Report on Nigerian Army Activities and Its Impact on National Security”, Major General Ibrahim Attahiru, said that the media was important to notional security as a key terrain in the battle field. The resource person said that the media despite framing reports port raying Nigerian Army during operations as working against the people equally painted the army as being weak.
He noted that negative narratives make the citizenry lose confidence in the Army, and also weaken the efforts of the military that places premium on national interest.
He stressed the need for the media to understand the operations of the Army and work together to make a positive impact in the society, adding that if citizens were impacted wrongly by the media, people would be forced to look for alternative security.
