Edo Communities Suffer Five Years Power Outage
Ten communities in Ovia
North-East Local Government Area of Edo State have cried out over the absence of electricity in their area for the past five years.
The communities alleged that the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) denied them electricity, a situation they said was not rectified by the successor company, the Benin Distribution Company (BEDC).
Utese community Youth President, Mr Terry Ebosa, told newsmen that, “some years back, there was challenges ranging from power supply distributed to these communities. The PHCN had complained that their installation that supplied the communities at Okada, was not able to distribute to other communities.
“After a while, we started experiencing some epileptic formation in the sharing scheme, sometimes for two weeks, there will be no light, before we were forgotten till now.”
He said, for countless times, the communities made efforts to contact the new company (BEDC) to come to their aid but that all the efforts could not yield fruitful result.
The communities affected are Aghanokpe, Egbeta, Egekpanu, Gberao, Ogbese, Okeodo, Olumoye, Ugbodo Camp, Ugbuwe, Uhen and Utese.
Ebosa, further alleged that BEDC refused to restore electricity to the affected communities because they failed to pay N900,000 which the firm claimed to be owed by them within the period under review.
“When we heard this, we were astounded at the huge debt alleged to have been owned the distribution company. But, after calculation, it is believed that we owed N349,000, which we agreed to pay after we were connected despite the estimated billings because we made use of the bulk bill meters”, he stated.
Chairman, Egbete Community Development Association, Mr Avite Ediac, lamented that there was no basis for the current situation which the communities have been subjected to and appealed to the state government to come to their aid.
He said the situation was frustrating the socio-economic development of the affected communities.
